چکیده

The olfactory system plays one of the key roles in the lives of humans and animals. It can detect thousands of different odor molecules through a large family of olfactory receptors (ORs), of a diverse protein sequence, which are located in olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in the olfactory epithelium in the nose of humans, and in the vomeronasal organ in animals. The OR family is comprised of 172 subfamilies, whose members have related protein sequences and are encoded by a single chromosomal locus. The human receptor gene family includes 339 intact receptor genes and 297 receptor pseudogenes, unevenly distributed among 51 different loci on 21 human chromosomes. Different parts of the genome may be involved in the detection of different types of structural odorants.

Recent concepts about sense of smell, odorant receptors and physiology of olfaction- an insight

The sense of olfaction reached its zenith in development much earlier than other special senses. Olfaction is much more acute than the other senses, exhibits both high sensitivity for odours and high discrimination between them. This plays a very important role even in the social and behavioral aspects of human beings. Recent studies using molecular genetics, electrophysiology and behavioral an...

A Family of non-GPCR Chemosensors Defines an Alternative Logic for Mammalian Olfaction

Odor perception in mammals is mediated by parallel sensory pathways that convey distinct information about the olfactory world. Multiple olfactory subsystems express characteristic seven-transmembrane G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in a one-receptor-per-neuron pattern that facilitates odor discrimination. Sensory neurons of the "necklace" subsystem are nestled within the recesses of the ol...

What can an orbitofrontal cortex-endowed animal do with smells?

It is widely presumed that odor quality is a direct outcome of odorant molecular structure, but increasing evidence suggests that learning, experience, and context play important roles in human olfactory perception. Such data suggest that a given set of olfactory receptors activated by an odorant does not map directly onto a given odor percept. Rather, odor perception may rely on more synthetic...

Perceptual and Neural Plasticity of Odor Quality Coding in the Human Brain

Current neurobiological models of odor perception tend to emphasize the “bottom-up” contributions of odorant chemistry in determining the perceptual features of an odor. However, increasing research suggests that “topdown” effects related to learning and experience play equally important roles in human olfactory perception, implying that a given set of olfactory receptors activated by an odoran...

Neuropeptide receptors provide a signalling pathway for trigeminal modulation of olfactory transduction.

The mammalian olfactory epithelium contains olfactory receptor neurons and trigeminal sensory endings. The former mediate odor detection, the latter the detection of irritants. The two apparently parallel chemosensory systems are in reality interdependent in various well-documented ways. Psychophysical studies have shown that virtually all odorants can act as irritants, and that most irritants ...

SNIFFING OUT SMELL: Odorant Detection, Coding, and Perception

Smell, the most ancient of all senses, is crucial for animal reproduction and survival. Humans can detect the most minute changes in odorant structures as a different perceived odor. Despite its significance, the mechanism of olfactory sensory perception remained unknown before 1991. Through research in my lab and others, we discovered a large multigene family containing approximately 1000 gene...
